The Fight for Landmarking

Beverley Square West has been engaged in a years-long effort to have our neighborhood recognized as an historic district with the same protections enjoyed by nearby areas of the same vintage. in 2025, the city's Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) took the matter into consideration -- with mixed results: While Marlborough, Rugby, and Argyle Roads between Beverley and Cortelyou Roads received historic district designation, the western half of the neighborhood (Westminster and Stratford Roads, Beverley Road west of Argyle, Matthews Court, Lewis Place, and Slocum Place) were excluded. A concerted community effort continues to persuade the LPC to expand the boundaries.  Key documents relating to the landmarking process and advocacy for inclusion are  provided here for review and download.

Request for Landmark Boundary Change

Here is an overview of the BSW Board's case for landmarking the entire Beverley Square West neighborhood, submitted to the Landmarks Preservation Commission in June 2025.

Count Us ALL In

Author, photographer and community stalwart Roberta Grober Intrater created this Count Us ALL In document, which clearly demonstrates why the entire Beverley Square West neighborhood should be included in the designated historic district. Take her visual tour through BSW to see how both halves meet the same criteria for designation.

Excluded Homes & Streets

Following the LPC's announcement that it would be considering some, but not all, of Beverley Square West for landmarking, a group of neighbors and the BSW Board assembled this house-by-house argument for LPC to take another look at the excluded areas.

Changing Greenspace

How has greenspace in Victorian Flatbush changed over the past 100-plus years? Beverley Square West neighbor Olgierd Bilanow compiled this visual documentation of de-greening in non-landmarked areas. BSW believes our community's green assets (trees, gardens, the leafy streetscape) add urgency to our fight for historic district designation.

LPC Hearings

Scores of Beverley Square West neighbors testified at the LPC's October 21, 2025 hearing on the proposed historic district designation. Our passionate pleas were still on the minds of some commissioners at their November 25 meeting to decide the issue.  Although the vote did not go our way, the fignt for inclusive landmarking continues.
